I was recently sent the first in an exciting new book series from Disney Press called The Zodiac Legacy: Convergence. Part hero novel, part stylish comic book, this new series is the work of Marvel mastermind Stan Lee, author Stuart Moore, and artist Andie Tong.
About The Zodiac Legacy: Convergence
When twelve magical superpowers are unleashed on the world, a Chinese-American teenager named Steven will be thrown into the middle of an epic global chase. He’ll have to master strange powers, outrun super-powered mercenaries, and unlock the mysterious powers of the Zodiac.
Here’s a fabulous book trailer with Stan Lee introducing the story:
The Zodiac Legacy: Convergence is marketed to middle grade readers (ages 8-12), and I think that’s appropriate. The story of the zodiac and associated powers is intriguing, though it does get a little convoluted at times. But the brisk, abbreviated pace of the action and plot – familiar to any fan of comic books – keeps the reader moving right along.
Middle grade readers will be good at suspending their disbelief at some of the unlikely events and gaps in plot, whereas older readers might want something a bit tighter, more sophisticated. Having said that, I do think The Zodiac Legacy: Convergence is a lot of fun; it fills a great need for boys ages 8-12 who are hungry for something engaging to read.
There is what I would call action/adventure violence, but nothing you wouldn’t find in a standard comic book, and I do like that there is a little more meat with a fuller story here. The art by Andie Tong in The Zodiac Legacy: Convergence is fantastic. It punctuates the text quite nicely and adds a wonderful layer to the entire reading experience.
