Last week, I posted on Facebook how nice it would be to have a happy, out of the ordinary surprise to make that day a little different from all the rest. That evening, some good friends appeared on my doorstep singing Christmas carols (in August!), with a box of donuts just for me. “Surprise!” they said. I was so touched!
I love a good surprise. Life can sometimes get busy, and all to predictable – with surprises, I love the feeling of being totally caught off guard (in a good way), and the tangible proof that you are loved and cared for.

Marriott Rewards Parties To Date
Eight winners have already been announced from the first two Year of Surprises nomination periods. Four parties have taken place, and they have been spectacular!
26 year old Stephanie – a survivor of brain cancer and a stroke – celebrated life and her engagement with her family, fiance, and friends at a country BBQ and dance at TheVineyards and Winery at Lost Creek in Leesburg,VA. For his 30th birthday, devoted father and husband Bryan enjoyed an evening of music and special performances at The Baron’s Theatre at Whiskey Row Lofts in Louisville,KY. For his 50th birthday, military vet and role model Philip was surprised by an all-American evening of down-home Southern comfort food at the private lounge at the Columbia Marriott.
The surprise I am probably most moved by, though, is the high school graduation party Courtney’s parents threw for him. Having been through this milestone with my oldest, and preparing to go through it again with my next daughter this year, this hits close to home. I can also relate to Courtney’s challenge of being moved away from all his friends in his sophomore year, as our family did the same thing when my two daughter were in high school. The fact that Courtney’s friends were flown out to celebrate with him was fantastic!
