Lost in Austen: A Must-See for Fans of Pride & Prejudice

I had never heard of the delightful, quirky gem Lost in Austen until it appeared on the featured slider of my Hulu Plus home screen last month. I’m a huge fan of Pride & Prejudice (the book and A&E production), and enjoy finding new “takes” on the Regency classic (like Shannon Hale’s book Austenland).

A quick synopsis for Lost in Austen…

A 4-part British series made for ITV in 2008. Amanda, an ardentĀ Jane AustenĀ fan, lives in present day London with her boyfriend Michael, until she finds she’s swapped places with Austen’s fictional creation Elizabeth Bennet.

Lost in Austen CollageI will confess, one must suspend a great amount of disbelief to buy into this swap between reality and fiction, but what the show lacks in plausible details, it makes up for in absolute charm.

This is a fun, witty series, with amusing twists and at least one hilarious scene put in as a hat-tip to Colin Firth and a particular estate-side pond. The characters are not all who they seem to be, events don’t happen in line with Austen’s original plot, and the ending goes all willy-wonky (but you kind of want it to!). I thought the acting was fantastic and (as near as possible), the movie was as romantic as the source material.

I’m not sure how I missed this movie, but Lost in Austen has become a new favorite, and (in my opinion) a must-see for Pride & Prejudice fans everywhere.

Notes:

*349 reviews on Amazon give Lost in Austen an average of 4/5 stars!

*You can watch Lost in Austen for free on Hulu.com – OR – stream it to your TV through an enabled device with a Hulu Plus membership (1 week free trial, $7.99/mo after that).

*Lost in Austen was optioned as a major Hollywood movie, with Nora Ephron writing the script and set to direct when she passed away in 2012. I haven’t seen anything new in relation to the film, but it would be great to see it on the big screen.

Tell me: Are you a Jane Austen fan? Have you seen Lost in Austen? If so, what did you think?
