An Interview with UK Boy Band ‘The Wanted’

UK boy band The Wanted made it big last year on American charts with their pumped-up dance hit “Glad You Came.” Their newest song, “Chasing the Sun,” has been chosen as the title track for 20th Century Fox’s upcoming animated feature Ice Age: Continental Drift.

About The Wanted:

The Wanted are a British-Irish boy band. The band consists of Max George, Siva Kaneswaran, Jay McGuiness, Tom Parker and Nathan Sykes. The Wanted have rapidly become one of the world’s biggest and best pop bands. They have scored multiple UK number 1 singles, had a number one radio record in the US and have sold out venues all over the world including London’s O2 Arena.

About Ice Age: Continental Drift:

In ICE AGE 4: CONTINENTAL DRIFT, Scrat’s nutty pursuit of the cursed acorn, which he’s been after since the dawn of time, has world-changing consequences – a continental cataclysm that triggers the greatest adventure of all for Manny, Diego and Sid.  In the wake of these upheavals, Sid reunites with his cantankerous Granny, and the herd encounters a ragtag menagerie of seafaring pirates determined to stop them from returning home.

The film features the voice talents of Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, Denis Leary, Seann William Scott, Josh Peck, with Jennifer Lopez and Queen Latifah.  Peter Dinklage, Wanda Sykes, Aziz Ansari, Keke Palmer, Drake, Josh Gad, Alan Tudyk, Nick Frost, Joy Behar.

I had the chance to interview The Wanted recently via a conference call with four other bloggers, and we chatted about everything from movies to boy bands to pack leaders. Here are some of the high points of my time with them:

On the importance of soundtracks to film

Me: Obviously the film has a fantastic soundtrack including your song Chasing the Sun… What do you think of the importance of soundtracks to film? What do you think it adds to the experience of viewers?

The Wanted [Jay]: I think music directly brings the emotion factor. Imagine watching a horror movie without a soundtrack. It would be a totally different film, no effect, no feeling. And I think the same happens with animated titles and family films because it sets the tone for the audience.

I think our song, Chasing the Sun, sets the tone for the film very well. It’s fun & upbeat. And the other songs throughout the movie kind of give the audience an indication of what’s about to happen or how they should be feeling.

I think it’s a lot more important than people probably suspect, but we’re happy that we can lend our voices for this one because it’s just exciting.

On their different roles in the group

Me: In Ice Age, all the different characters form a somewhat of a ragtag pack of their own, and not to stir up any trouble, but I’m wondering if any of you is the “Manny” in the group or should I say the pack leader.

The Wanted [Jay]: I think it depends on the situation. For example in interviews, I usually take the lead only because I’m a bit of a chatterbox. When it comes to photo shoots, Siva, definitely leads, it’s the face! On stage, Nathan’s got a lot of presence, Max is like a strong paternal figure to us, and Tom is just a messy little character like Scrat.

On what sets them apart from other boy bands

Me: You guys do kind of fall within that genre of boy band, whether or not others agree. And we know that is sort of a saturated genre. So, I’m curious to know what you work on in particular to set yourselves apart from any of the other groups.

The Wanted: On our first album we wrote roughly 50 percent, and that percentage increases every time we write. I think if you have a vested interest in your album, the quality is probably better, and it makes it more fun to perform on stage. And I don’t know too many boy bands that can say the same.

I found The Wanted to be an incredibly charming group of young men – funny, thoughtful in their responses, excited and enthusiastic to talk to a little ol’ group of mom bloggers. They even gave a shout out to my three teenage daughters after learning they are fans. My cool factor just went way up.

It doesn’t hurt that “Chasing the Sun” is an incredibly catchy song. Check out this new music video for “Chasing the Sun” from The Wanted, featuring all your favorite Ice Age characters, and just *try* not to dance along:
