So You Think You Can Dance: My Favorites from the Top 20

Before we begin…

I am a reality tv junkie.

{There, I said it!}

I love me some New York Housewives (the New Jersey ones are pretty fun, too), America’s Next Top Model, Amazing Race, Project Runway, and so on and on and on.

{I draw the line at watching reality shows where they make contestants eat gross stuff, though. I have my limits.}

Within the genre, I am particularly drawn to reality tv competitions. None more so than So You Think You Can Dance.

So You Think You Can Dance offers something quite spectacular every season. Talent, passion, personality, skill, raw emotion, and oh, did I say: talent.

I watch every single episode of this show feeling more attached to and aware of my body, wishing I could dance the way these people dance. I learn more about dance every season, grow in my appreciation for the craft, and continue to be grateful that this quality show is on the air.

I watched tonight as the Top 20 were chosen, and I have some early favorites.

Iveta: Ballroom

This woman is a world champion ballroom dancer, and she has got CRAZY moves! I love watching her attack the floor, and I think she’ll bring some real excitement this season.

Nick: Tap

Where were they hiding him? They always do this on So You Think You Can Dance – purposely NOT focus on superstars during Vegas week so the audience can be totally surprised by someone fabulous when the final picks are made. I think Nick is charming and I’ve never had more fun watching tap!

Melanie: Contemporary

Love, love, love, love her. She’s my pick to win it all. She has such an engaging spirit and presence about her, and she has solid technique and skills. I think she is the TOTAL PACKAGE.

Marko: Contemporary, Jazz, Hip Hop

This dude has a BULLET IN HIS SHOULDER, and he still tears it up on the stage! Powerful and passionate, I hope he goes very far.

Ryan: Contemporary

Ryan is a strange one for me. I’m not particularly drawn to her when she’s being interviewed or when she’s standing still, but there’s something about her that comes alive when she dances. I feel like she steals the show in group numbers. She’s light and joyous, and I appreciate that. So glad she made it after being cut last year.

Jess: Broadway

I’ll be honest: this kid is a bit of a punk. He’s a bit arrogant, a little disconnected, and I’m not sure how he’s going to do reaching into some deeper emotions in certain routines. BUT, BUT…I love watching him dance. He has got MAD SKILLZ…doing what he does. I’m not sure how long he’s going to last, but you really can’t deny that he rocks his genre.

I have a few others I’ll be keeping my eye on – particularly Wadi (Hip Hop) and Tadd (Break Dancing), who I both feel could kind of creep up from under the radar in the coming weeks.

I DO know I’m already tired of the two “sex pots” – Jordan (Jazz) and especially Missy (Contemporary Jazz). And although the “Woo” guy – Robert (Hip Hop) – is a cutie, his schtick is getting old.

Now YOU TELL ME: are you a fan of So You Think You Can Dance? Do YOU have any early favorites?
