I absolutely love the Cheerios Spoonfuls of Stories program. Cheerios is already a staple in our house, but when we see that a new selection of books has been carefully placed – one by one – into the cereal boxes on store shelves, we make sure to pick up extras to collect more of the set. We have found a lot of new favorites that way, including the books Monkey and Me (which I often like to read to my son in Spanish – Mono y Yo), Sleepy Head, and now When Dinosaurs Came with Everything. [here’s a history of books included in the Spoonful of Stories program over the past 8 years]
*fyi: I have no association at this time with Cheerios or their Spoonfuls of Stories program. I’m just a super big fan. How funny is it that I feel the need to disclose that there’s nothing to disclose? Ah well…
When Dinosaurs Came with Everything is a clever book about what might be every little boy’s dream. Dragged around by his mom on a Friday afternoon full of errands, the boy in the story is pleasantly surprised when he discovers that there are no stickers, balloons, lollipops, or standards do-dads handed out on THIS day. No – you get a dinosaur instead! At the doughnut shop, the barbershop, even the shoe shop and diner – everyone is handing out dinosaurs as a “thank you for your patronage.” He is thrilled, his mother is not. But…over time she discovers the benefits of the situation and makes the most of it.
I just love the whimsical and matter-of-fact tone of the story despite the extraordinary circumstances. I also enjoy naming the different dinosaurs as they become part of this boy’s herd, and the exasperation of the mom as the herd grows. It’s silly and bewildering and heartwarming all at the same time.
