Music Review: Michael Bublé Meets Madison Square Garden CD/DVD

Near the end of my 5th pregnancy in the summer of 2007, I was having a tough time physically.  I was technically on bed rest, but laying down all day meant that I sometimes couldn’t sleep at night.  I remember the wee hours of one particular night when, while flipping channels, I landed on a Michael Bublé concert on PBS.  I had been a lukewarm fan of his music, but after watching his brilliant live performance, and seeing how charming he was – and such an “entertainer” as well! – I really fell in love.

I was truly pleased when Warner Bros Records offered me the chance to review Bublé’s most recent concert, the new CD/DVD release of Michael Bublé Meets Madison Square Garden.

From the promotional material:

Following his first #1 Pop album and his third platinum-plus disc, 2007’s Grammy® winning Call Me Irresponsible, singing sensation Michael Bublé returns to the stage with the live CD+DVD package Michael Bublé Meets Madison Square Garden. Featuring powerful performances of his hits ‘Everything,’ ‘Home’ and ‘Feeling Good,’ he brings the December 2008 concert at one of the most famous venues in entertainment history home to fans with Michael Bublé Meets Madison Square Garden.

I found the DVD delightful.  You should know, however, that this is NOT a full recording of the concert itself.  It’s more of a reflective piece, following Bublé as he preps for the show and ruminates on the many years of hard work that have brought him to this pinnacle of his career.  There are a handful of performances scattered through the 60 minutes of video.  The CD contains live performances of several of Bublé’s great hits, as well as some fabulous jazz standards.

Okay, now how WEIRD is it that I was actually singing, in my head, a Michael Buble song right before I clicked on this post?!

This is going to sound pathetic, but the only concert I’ve been to was was with a friend for her 8th birthday. It was for . . . . Neil Diamond. So, I guess he wins by default. LOL! Oh, and I follow you on Twitter! @LisGarrett

I know this is going to sound corny, considering the contest, but my favorite concert ever was Michael Buble. I was a fan of his music, but after seeing him in concert, I fell in LOOOOOVE! I saw him 39 weeks pregnant and remember having a lot of contractions that day… I told my girlfriend I don’t care if my water breaks, we’re staying for the WHOLE concert! Fortunately, it didn’t end up being an issue 🙂

My sisters and I absolutely LOVE Michael Buble’s music! The best live concert I ever went to was when I was in college. A group of us took a trip to see Bebo Norman and Caedmon’s Call…. this was before they hit it big in the CCM circles, so it was a pretty small concert…. and it was oh so much fun!!

Is it dumb to say one of my favorite concerts was my own?! 🙂 Truly a surreal experience to see a larger-than-life poster of yourself up in a window! It was SO much fun. Now that I’ve tooted my own horn…a truly incredible concert experience: Sissel with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. She is unbelievable!!!!!!!!!!!

It’s so hard to choose! It’s a toss-up between country stars Emerson Drive and Chris Cagle, who are both amazing! But I’d have to go with Emerson Drive since during the first part of the last song, they stuck the microphone in my face as I was singing. I still get butterflies when I think of it!

I have to say my most surprisingly enjoyable concert was Kid Rock. I had tickets to a week long festival and he played one night. I went because we had tickets and did not expect much. But what a fun, entertaining night it was. He was spot on. loved it.

Buble is really funny. This would be great.

I used to work at big outside concerts, and those can be great but are so impersonal. My favorite performance was by Eagle Eye Cherry at a local billiard hall. There were about sixty people at most and so the whole thing was intimate and amazing. After, while I was using the bathroom one of the band members was brushing his teeth. It was awesome.

This will sound quite odd, but Boxcar Willie. The audience was really into his songs and the outdoor concert was within site of the main terminal of the Rock Island Line.

when i was very young, John Denver gave a concert at the NSU campus during Christmas Festival in Natchitoches, Louisiana. He had a voice like a crystal bell that vibrates through your body. None of his records could reproduce the sound of his live preformances. I’m still impressed.

My favorite live concert I’ve ever seen was back in March when my husband and I went with 2 bus loads of people from our church to the Rock and Worship Roadshow where we saw Jeremy Camp, MercyMe, 10th Avenue North and Hawk Nelson perform. It was awesome to worship with thousands of other people all in one place. It is something I’ll never forget, for sure.

If I can choose from a live concert OR show…I’ll have to say Cirque de Soleil. AMAZING! I’ve seen both a traveling show and a non-traveling show – the ones that don’t travel are SO much better simply because they can rig up the place so uniquely. I loved the live music, and the performances were enthralling, yet still appealed to adults (no kiddie circus, here!).
