When in Rome

My kids just told me today that after they get done saying the Pledge of Allegiance to the US flag in class each morning, they then turn to the Texas flag and say the Pledge of Allegiance to the Texas Flag.  I had never heard of such a thing!!  I don’t have any serious objections or anything, but it did surprise me just a little.

I saw a bumper sticker today that said “Texas is bigger than France.”  That made me laugh.

We also saw a Christmas light display that said, “Merry Christmas, y’all.”

Yesterday at Walmart I bought some Texas Yellow Cornbread Mix.  The directions say to stir the mix with milk and sugar, and then bake it in a “corn stick pan.”  Which of course meant that I looked all over Walmart for a “corn stick pan.”  When I didn’t find one, I came home and Googled an image of it so I know what the heck I’m looking for.  I will try again this weekend to locate one.  🙂

I find it hilarious that they have large road signs that say “Church” right near very large church buildings (of which there are many).  There are also many signs that read “Drive Friendly” and “We Love Our Children…Slow Down.”  And in certain areas where there are lots of trees, you’ll see a sign that says, “These Trees Planted for Your Enjoyment.”  Ah…thanks!

I am *loving* what they call “feeder roads,” which are two or three lane roads that run exactly parallel to the freeway and have a 50mph speed limit.  It means you can get on the freeway if you want to, or still get where you’re going without the hassle of merging on and off.  I wish I could explain it better, but I love them!

I went to my very first Super Target the other day.  Say it with me everyone:  NIRVANA.

  • Hey darlin’, you got out of the North WET just in time!

And you don’t need a corn stick pan. You can make it in a 9×9 pan. Corn bread is corn bread… and honestly, it’s supposed to be made in squares, not those sissified molded pans.

Stop that laughing. And YES, I do have one of those pans. It’s pointless. Use a regular pan. TRUST ME.

And you discovered the feeder roads… Heh. 😀

Did you know we got hit by a Hurricane? Yeah, locals are calling it a “STORM” but I don’t think so! 130 mph winds for days, days I tell you is not a “storm”.

  • Mom

What an adventure it is to live and learn about other parts of our country!:) We’re all watching your blogs daily! I’m glad things are going well. However…I’m having some separation issues with you being so far away! 🙁 xoxoxoxo

  • Muffin tins. From a professional Texas cornbread eater, cornbread muffins are the best. Every piece has lots of crust, and then you soak it in butter. You eat the tops first, then get to the best part, the bottoms. Oh, and you have to eat them in pairs. You can’t sneak a bottom and leave the top on the plate. It’s just not good manners.

All you use the square pan for is cornbread you put under your pinto beans along with the fried ‘taters.

Seriously, welcome to Texas where even the Targets are super-sized. Next … visit the Walmart SuperCenter.
